Heating oil types: standard, low-sulphur, premium, bio

Heating oil is not all the same. We explain the grades plainly , and what the advertising terms are really worth.

The grades
The key standard

Low-sulphur is the norm today

For modern condensing boilers, low-sulphur heating oil has become established. It burns cleaner, protects the boiler and is usually required for condensing technology.

Standard heating oil still exists but is meant for older systems. Before you order, it is worth checking what your boiler needs.

The grades at a glance

  • Standard heating oil: the classic light heating oil, higher sulphur content, for older boilers.
  • Low-sulphur heating oil: much less sulphur, cleaner combustion, the standard for condensing boilers.
  • Premium heating oil: low-sulphur oil with additives (e.g. for longer storage life and fewer deposits). The benefit is real but limited , it remains fossil heating oil.
  • Bio heating oil: contains a share from renewable sources. Sounds green, but the blend share is usually small and must suit the boiler.

Said honestly

„Premium“ sounds like a lot; the surcharge mainly pays off if the oil sits in the tank longer, because the additives slow ageing. For a quickly used tank the added value is small. And „bio“ does not turn an oil heater into a climate-neutral one; the renewable share is limited. More important than the marketing grade is that the oil matches your boiler’s approval. We give you the facts, the decision stays with you.
