Modern engines are designed for certain oil properties. Cars with a particulate filter (DPF/GPF) in particular need low-ash „Low-SAPS“ oils. The wrong oil can clog the filter.
So the rule is: first read the required approval from the manual, then buy an oil that carries exactly that approval on the label. The brand is secondary.

The right oil in three steps
- 1. Open the owner’s manual: it states the required viscosity (e.g. 5W-30) and the approval (e.g. VW 504 00 or MB 229.51).
- 2. Choose an oil with exactly that approval: serious makers print the approvals clearly on the canister.
- 3. Mind the fill quantity: how many litres your engine holds and which interval applies is also in the manual.
If in doubt, a manufacturer’s oil finder or your workshop helps. All that matters is that the approval is correct.
Said honestly
Fully synthetic, semi-synthetic or mineral sounds like big differences. In the end, all that counts for you is whether the approval fits, because modern approvals require high-quality base oils anyway. Expensive brand oils and cheap own-brands with the same approval are technically equivalent. Save the surcharge for the image, but not the look in the manual.
