Oil additives: what really helps, what is marketing

The miracle cure for the engine? We take a sober look at what oil additives can do , and what you can save yourself.

The honest look
Already built in

Good oil is already additivated

Fresh brand oil contains a balanced additive package by default: detergents against deposits, dispersants, wear protection, antioxidants. This package is tuned precisely to the approval.

Pouring in third-party additives can upset this balance. Some manufacturers even warn against it explicitly and see the approval at risk.

What’s true , and what isn’t

  • „Wear reduced by X %“: such figures often come from lab conditions that have little to do with everyday life. In a real engine with good oil the added benefit is usually small.
  • Engine flushes before the oil change: can make sense in heavily sludged engines, but also loosen deposits that then block passages. Use with care.
  • Regular oil changes: this is the most effective „care“. Fresh, matching oil at the right interval beats any additive.

Said honestly

We are not selling you a miracle cure here. For the vast majority of vehicles the rule is: matching oil to approval, fresh filter, change at the prescribed interval, done. The money for expensive additives is usually better spent on the next regular oil change. There are exceptions, such as old, sludged engines, but that is not the normal case. We give you the facts, the decision stays with you.
