What it is

What essential oils are

Essential oils are highly concentrated, volatile plant extracts, usually obtained by steam distillation. They are not fatty oils like olive or almond oil, but pure aromatic compounds, and that is exactly why they are so powerful.

A single drop equals a large amount of plant material. This concentration is their biggest advantage and at the same time the reason to use them with respect.

Discover the world of essential oils

Safety first, said honestly

Essential oils are effective, and that calls for responsible handling, something many marketing promises leave out. The most important rules:

  • Never neat on the skin: always dilute in a carrier oil, usually only a few drops per tablespoon of base oil.
  • Do not ingest: without expert guidance, essential oils do not belong in the mouth.
  • Caution with pregnancy, babies and small children: only after advice and very sparingly.
  • Phototoxicity: citrus oils like bergamot can make skin light-sensitive, so avoid the sun afterwards.
  • Pets: cats in particular are very sensitive, and many oils are toxic to them.
  • Avoid eyes and mucous membranes and store oils cool, dark and out of children’s reach.

Also look for genuine, pure oils. Cheap „fragrance oils“ or products labelled „nature-identical“ are often synthetic and not the same thing. We give you the facts, the decision stays with you.
