5W-30, ACEA, API: the codes made simple

What does the number on the canister really mean? We translate viscosity and standards into plain language.

What 5W-30 means
Viscosity

How thin or thick the oil is

Viscosity describes how thick an oil is. Too thin does not lubricate, too thick does not flow fast enough on a cold start. A multigrade oil solves both: thin enough at start-up, stable enough in the heat.

The SAE grade like 5W-30 tells you exactly that , in two parts.

5W-30 decoded

  • 5W: the „W“ stands for winter. The number before it shows cold behaviour , the smaller it is, the better the oil flows in the cold and the faster it lubricates at start-up.
  • 30: the second number describes the thickness at operating temperature (100 °C). Higher number = more stable in the heat.

Which grade your engine needs is set by the manufacturer. You should not switch to a different viscosity on your own.

ACEA and API: the performance standards

Besides viscosity, the quality standard counts , it describes what the oil must deliver.

  • ACEA (European): e.g. A/B for petrol and diesel, C for low-ash Low-SAPS oils with a particulate filter.
  • API (American): e.g. SN, SP for petrol engines. The later the letter, the newer the standard.
  • Manufacturer approvals (VW, MB, BMW): the strictest level, they take priority over everything else.

Said honestly

Some canisters list a dozen standards, which looks like „fits everywhere“. Don’t rely on the number of logos, check whether the one approval your engine requires is among them. An oil with the correct approval is enough, even if it is cheaper than the advertised product next to it. We give you the facts, the decision stays with you.
