Blending and diluting oils properly

Only the right blend turns single oils into a rounded whole. We show you the basics , and how to dilute safely.

How a blend is built

Balanced scent blends often follow the principle of top, heart and base notes. The top note (such as citrus) is volatile and noticed first, the heart note (such as lavender) carries the blend, and the base note (such as cedarwood) lingers longest.

Synergy means oils complement each other in effect and scent rather than overpowering one another. Less is usually more.

Dilute properly

For the skin, essential oils are always diluted in a carrier oil. As a rough guide, low single-digit percentages apply for adults, meaning only a few drops per tablespoon of base oil. For sensitive skin, the face or children, dilute much lower or skip it entirely.

  • Choose a base: a mild carrier oil like almond or jojoba.
  • Dose sparingly: better to start low and increase carefully.
  • Skin test: test a new blend on the inner arm first.
  • Label it: note contents and date, store cool and dark.

Blend safely

Only blend what you know, and stick to proven amounts. Never neat on the skin, do not ingest, avoid citrus oils before sunbathing due to phototoxicity, and be especially careful with pregnancy, small children and pets. We give you the facts, the decision stays with you.
