Baby oil: natural plant oil or mineral oil?
Classic baby oil is often mineral oil. We explain the difference to natural plant oils , factually, so you can choose.
The differenceMineral oil vs plant oil
Many conventional baby oils are based on mineral oil (paraffin), a petroleum product. It sits on the skin as a protective film and is cheap and very stable. Natural baby oils use plant oils such as almond oil, which the skin can interact with more.
Both are used for baby care, but they are fundamentally different materials.
How they compare
- Mineral oil: very stable, cheap, forms a film; some parents prefer to avoid petroleum-based products on baby skin.
- Plant oils (e.g. almond): closer to natural skin lipids, but can go off and may matter for nut allergies.
- Read the label: terms like paraffinum liquidum or petrolatum indicate mineral oil.
- Less is more: healthy baby skin often needs very little oil at all.
Said honestly
This is your choice, and we make no health promises. Many parents prefer a simple, natural plant oil and use it sparingly; others value the stability of mineral oil. What matters most for baby skin: use little, patch test, and for any skin issue ask your paediatrician or midwife. We give you the facts, the decision stays with you.
