Bio heating oil and climate-friendlier alternatives

Heating oil is being made greener than it long was. We sort out honestly what is behind it.

To the facts
What this is about

Blending instead of pure mineral oil

Bio heating oil is mostly classic heating oil with a share of renewable or synthetic components, for example from plant residues or as a paraffinic fuel. The aim is to lower the fossil share and thus the emissions.

Pure alternatives such as HVO are technically possible, but still limited in broad availability.

Sorted out factually

  • The system must fit: not every burner tolerates every bio share, the manufacturer’s approval counts.
  • Availability and price: higher bio shares are often more expensive and not available everywhere.
  • Legal framework: the building energy law sets the frame in which oil heating may be operated in future.
  • No free pass: greener does not mean emission-free, the balance depends heavily on where the components come from.

Said honestly

Bio heating oil can lower the fossil share, but it is no miracle for climate-neutral heating, and the advertising here sometimes promises more than the balance delivers. Anyone switching checks system approval, availability, price and the legal framework. When in doubt, a specialist firm and independent bodies can advise. We give you the facts, the decision stays with you.
