Check and top up the oil level: step by step
Done in two minutes and it saves expensive trouble. We show how to do it right.
To the guide
What this is about
The oil level helps decide the engine’s fate
Too little oil can badly damage the engine, but so can too much. That is why a regular look at the dipstick pays off, especially before longer trips and with older vehicles.
The key is to measure correctly, otherwise the stick shows a false value.
How to check it right
- Level and warm: car on level ground, engine warmed up, then off for a few minutes.
- Pull and wipe the dipstick: pull it out once, wipe it clean, reinsert fully and pull again.
- Between min and max: the film should sit between the two marks, ideally in the upper half.
- Top up in small steps: use the correct oil, add a little, measure again, twice rather than too much.
- Do not overfill: above max is harmful, then oil has to be drained again.
Said honestly
Checking the oil level is simple and part of normal care, all that matters is level ground, a warm engine and the correct oil. Topping up does not replace an overdue oil change, and anyone who has to top up constantly has an issue for the workshop. We give you the facts, the decision stays with you.
