What this is about

Oil turns solid, without water

A balm is basically oil made solid with a little wax. Because it contains no water, it needs no preservative and keeps well with clean work. Beeswax is classic, plant waxes are the vegan alternative.

The ratio of oil to wax determines how firm the balm becomes.

The base recipe

  • Base ratio: about four to five parts oil to one part wax, the more wax, the firmer.
  • Melt: melt oil and wax gently in a water bath, do not overheat.
  • Scent optional: after melting, stir in a few drops of essential oil, sparingly.
  • Fill: pour into clean tins and let it set.
  • Caution hot: melted wax is hot, take care while melting and filling.
  • Work cleanly: clean containers extend the shelf life.

Said honestly

A homemade balm is simple, long-lasting and lovely for dry hands, lips or rough spots, only caution with the hot wax is needed while melting. It is care, not treatment, and we make no healing promises. Dose essential oils sparingly and test tolerance first. We give you the facts, the decision stays with you.
