Leather care with oil: what works and what does not

Oil can keep leather supple, but not every leather tolerates it. We show how to do it right.

What this is about

Keep supple, do not drown

Smooth leather can stay supple with a little care oil and be protected from drying out. What matters is the right leather type and very little oil, because too much makes stains and can darken the leather.

Suede and nubuck are off limits, here oil is the wrong choice.

How to proceed

  • Smooth leather only: unsuitable for suede, nubuck and coated leather.
  • Test on a hidden spot: check an inconspicuous area first, the leather can darken.
  • Very sparingly: a little oil on a soft cloth, work in thinly and evenly.
  • Suitable oils: special leather oils are the safest, some use a neutral care oil very sparingly.
  • Let it dry: let it absorb and remove excess oil.

Said honestly

Oil can care for smooth leather, but it is no all-purpose remedy: the wrong leather type or too much oil does more harm than good. Always test on a hidden spot first and work sparingly. For valuable pieces, a suitable leather-care product or a specialist firm is the safe choice. We give you the facts, the decision stays with you.
