Heating oil needs explaining and is expensive in bulk. Some suppliers exploit exactly that: the prominently advertised price per litre often applies only under ideal conditions , huge quantity, easy access, instant payment. In reality, surcharges are added.
Those who know the tactics compare the real total price and don’t let themselves be pressured.
The most common marketing strategies
- Bait price for maximum quantities: the low price per 100 litres only applies from very large order amounts that a normal household rarely takes.
- Artificial urgency: „cheap today, dearer tomorrow“ and countdown displays create pressure. The market fluctuates, but panic buying is rarely wise.
- Hidden surcharges: small-quantity, hose-length, floor or access surcharges only appear in the small print or during checkout.
- „Premium“ surcharge: additives are sold as a big advantage. The benefit is real but limited , mainly with longer storage.
- Prepayment bait offers: especially low prices against prepayment. With unknown suppliers a real risk if no delivery follows.
- Regional price spread: the same supplier quotes very different prices by postcode.
Total price, not bait price
Always compare the final price including all surcharges for your real amount and your access, not the advertised price per litre. Check delivery area, date and payment method.
Group orders with neighbours honestly lower the price per litre, because the quantity rises. A serious, locally reachable supplier is worth more than a few cents saved if problems arise.

Comparison portals are useful but earn from brokerage , that is legitimate, but you should be aware of it. Don’t bet everything on the absolute minimum, and avoid prepayment to unknown suppliers.
