How to dispose of old cooking oil properly
Oil never belongs down the drain. We show how to get rid of it correctly and gently on the environment.
To the rulesOil in the drain causes trouble
Cooking oil belongs neither in the sink nor the toilet. In the wastewater it clogs pipes, builds up and can lead to expensive blockages, and at the treatment plant it causes further problems.
The good news: disposed of correctly it is no drama, and often it can be used first.

How to dispose of it properly
- Small amounts in the residual waste: pour cooled oil into a sealable bottle or container and put it in the residual waste.
- Soaking up works too: take up residues with kitchen paper and put them in the residual waste or, where allowed, the bio-waste.
- Larger amounts to a collection point: recycling centres or collection drives take used cooking fat.
- Use it first: clean frying fat can often be filtered and used a few more times before it has to go.
- Never down the drain: the most important rule, no matter how small the amount.
Said honestly
Disposing of cooking oil properly is simple: never down the drain, but cooled and sealed into the residual waste, or for larger amounts to a collection point. If you fry cleanly, you can use the fat first and save yourself waste. Local rules may differ, so when in doubt check with your waste service. We give you the facts, the decision stays with you.
