What it is

A solid, very stable fat

Palm oil comes from the fruit of the oil palm. It is semi-solid, very heat-stable and extremely cheap to produce, which is why it is in countless foods, spreads and cosmetics. It is high in saturated fatty acids.

That stability and price are exactly why the industry uses so much of it.

The two debates

  • Environment: palm oil production is linked to deforestation and habitat loss. Certifications like RSPO aim at more sustainable sourcing, but the topic remains contested.
  • Health: it is high in saturated fat; expert bodies advise not to overdo saturated fats. Heavily refined palm oil can also form unwanted process contaminants when over-processed.
  • Where it hides: often labelled simply as „vegetable fat“ in older products; the EU now requires clearer labelling.

Palm oil is neither pure evil nor harmless. It is a cheap, stable industrial fat with real environmental questions and a high saturated-fat content. We make no health promises.
