Diesel or petrol: does the oil differ?

Is there special diesel or petrol oil? The short answer: the approval decides, not the fuel type alone. We explain.

The difference
The principle

The approval covers it

Many modern multigrade oils are approved for petrol and diesel alike. What matters is that the oil meets your engine’s specification, e.g. an ACEA C class for cars with a particulate filter.

Diesel with a particulate filter (DPF) needs low-ash „Low-SAPS“ oils. That is exactly what your approval states.

What matters

  • Approval before fuel type: an oil with the right manufacturer approval is correct, whether diesel or petrol.
  • Particulate filter: DPF and GPF require low-ash Low-SAPS oils (often ACEA C). The wrong oil can clog the filter.
  • Viscosity: the specified SAE grade (e.g. 5W-30) applies regardless of fuel.

Said honestly

„Diesel oil“ or „petrol oil“ on the front is mostly marketing. What counts is the approval in your owner’s manual. A universal oil with the correct specification fits , more expensive does not automatically mean better. We give you the facts, the decision stays with you.
