Oil change: how often and what it costs
How often should you change the oil, and what is fair to pay? We explain the interval and the costs , without workshop scare tactics.
The intervalThe manual sets the rhythm
The change interval is set by the manufacturer, by mileage and/or time, e.g. every 15,000 to 30,000 km or once a year. Longlife systems can go further, but only with the correct longlife oil and approval.
Short trips, towing and old engines can justify changing earlier than the maximum.

What it costs , and where
- Oil & filter: the main material cost, depending on how much oil the engine takes and the required approval.
- Labour: a workshop adds working time; an oil change is one of the simpler jobs.
- Yourself: possible with the right tools and proper disposal of the waste oil , see our disposal article.
- Watch the approval: a matching oil at a fair price beats an expensive brand with the same spec.
Said honestly
You don’t need to change oil more often than the manufacturer says , extra changes rarely hurt, but they cost money for little gain on a healthy engine. What matters is the right approval and not stretching the interval far beyond the limit. We give you the facts, the decision stays with you.
